Life Between the Two World Wars (1919–1939) World War I was the largest and most destructive war the world had seen until then. Millions of people were killed or seriously injured. Many European countries were left economically and socially damaged. The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. People welcomed the end of the war and hoped for lasting peace Britain was not invaded, but its economy became weak. The USA became the world's leading economic power, replacing Britain. Britain had borrowed a lot of money from the USA during the war and had to repay it. Representation of the People's Act (1918) Almost all men over 21 and women over 25 got the right to vote. Women earned this right because of their important work during the war. Economic Problems 1. After the war, many soldiers returned home and became unemployed. 2. The cost of living remained high. 3.
