                 Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore was a renowned Bengali poet and playwright. He won Nobel Prize for literature in the year 1913 for his work Gitanjali. Kabuliwala is a short story which narrates the story of a 5 year old young girl named Mini and Kabul - based sweet vendor. The story depicts the theme of love, seperation and cultural barrier.
Mini is a five - year old girl who is curious, talkative and full of life. His real name is Rahman, an Afgan merchant who travels to Kolkata to sell dry fruits. The friendship between Mini and the Kabuliwala is the essence of the story.
The Kabuliwala sees his own daughter Parvathi in the face of Mini. For Mini Kabuliwala is a source of happiness and joy. The two had their own special jokes. He gave her plenty of nuts and raisins. The man would tease Mini asking her when she was going to her father-in-law's house which also meant prison. This they spent many hours in happy companionship.
Rahman is a tall, big figure, with loosely flowing robes and a high turban. Kabuliwala is a kind man, with great love for children. His relationship with Mini is so great. This is evident from his constant memory of the little daughter. They seemed to be happy to be in each others company.
Kabuliwala is arrested for a violent action and is sentenced to imprisonment. After seven years of imprisonment, Kabuliwala comes to see Mini. Mini is a grown-up girl. She has forgotten him and cannot show the same old relationship.
The man asked her whether she is going to her father-in-law's house. The question made her feel very shy. She quickly left the place.
