Assonance is a literary device in which the same vowel sound is repeated in nearby words to create rhythm, mood, or emphasis.

Examples:
The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain. (Repeated long "a" sound)
Go and mow the lawn. (Repeated long "o" sound)
The light of the fire is a sight. (Repeated long "i" sound)

Purpose of assonance:
1.Creates a musical or rhythmic effect.
2.Emphasizes certain words or ideas.
3.Enhances the mood and flow of writing.

                           Consonance 
Consonance is a literary device in which the same consonant sound is repeated in nearby words, especially at the end or in the middle of words.

Examples:
Pitter-patter (repeated "t" sound)
Dump, jump (repeated "mp" sound)
The lump was on the camp. (repeated "mp" sound)

Purpose of consonance:
1.Creates rhythm and musicality.
2.Emphasizes words or ideas.
3.Makes writing more memorable.

  Like an Old Proud King in a Parable A. J.M. Smith The Poem Like an Old Proud King in a Parable was written by the Canadian Poet, A.J.M Smith. This poem appeared in McGill Fortnightly Review in the year 1926. In this poem Smith narrates the story of an Old King who abandons his Kingdom to become a poet. This poem depicts the poetic career of Smith. Smith breaks some of the old poetic conventions and brings novelty into the society. A king is bored to forego the pleasure of the Kingdom.
