Rip Van Winkle is a story written by Washing Irving. The tale is set in a small Dutch village at the foothill of Kaatskill Mountains. The story revolves around Rip Van Winkle. He is a simple and good-natured person. He is lazy and a henpecked husband. He is fond of escaping from his domestic responsibilities.
The story opens with Rip Van Winkle. He is trying to escape from the nagging wife and enjoys solitude. On his journey he encounters a mysterious stranger carrying a king of liquor. As they climb higher Rip obliges and carries the stranger load up to mountain. They invite Rip to join them in drinking from the keg and falls asleep.
When Rip awakes, he is shocked to find that everything has changed. His gun is now rusty and old, and his loyal dog. He comes to his village to discover that it has transformed as well.
He learns from the villagers that he was asleep for twenty years. Many people he knew are either dead or moved away. Even Rip's wife who is domineering has gone away. His long nap has caused him to miss two decades of history.
Rip's daughter, now grown up, takes him in, and he attempts to adapt to the new world around him.
The story concludes with Rip Van Winkle trying to adjust to his changed life. He becomes a respected and beloved figure in the village.
