This poem depicts the dark and and dreary landscape of Canada. "Out in a world of death far to the northward lying". The poet is describing the Northern region of Canada as a world of death employing the image of Winters Lake.  It is a land of death where waste and white stretch the great Lakes. This region remains dull and worthless lacking love, happiness and peace.
This poem presents the darker side of    Canadian Landscape. The poet makes a contrast between death and life. The dominating season in Canada is Winter. This region is veiled with snow. In this deadly land bushes and flowering plants never exists. The land remains haunted. The poet compares this land to a desert. " Wastes of desolate woods, deserts of water and shore".In this desert snowy region one can feel only loneliness and loss.
