Eight Poets who won Jnanpith Award

 

1.Sankara Kurup

Sankara Kurup is a Malayalam poet. He won the first Jnanpith Award in 1965, for his anthology of poems, titled Odakkuzhal. He was the first recipient of the Jnanpith Award―the highest Indian literary honor.     

2. Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri

He is popularly known as Akkitham. He was an Indian poet and essayist who wrote in Malayalam. Akkitham was the recipient of India’s highest literary honour, the Jnanpith Award in 2019. His prominent works included Epic of the 20th century, The vision of Bali, and   Holy moment.

3. Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa

He is popularly known by his pen name Kuvempu. He was an Indian poet, playwright, novelist and critic. He is the greatest Kannada poet of the 20th century. He was the first Kannada writer to be by decorated with the Jnanpith Award.


4.  Chandrashekhara Kambara

He is an Indian poet, playwright, folklorist, film director in Kannada language. He has been conferred

 with many prestigious awards including the Padma Bhushan in 2021. He received his Jnanpith Award

 in 2011 for the year 2010.


5.Dattātreya Rāmachandra Bēndre

He is considered the greatest Kannada lyric poet of the 20th century. He is one of the greatest poets in the history of Kannada literature. In 1973, Bendre was awarded the Jnanapitha, India's highest literary award, for his 1964 poetry collection, Naaku Tanti.


6. Sumitranandan Pant 

He was an Indian poet. He was one of the most celebrated 20th century poets of Hindi language.  In 1969, Pant became the first Hindi poet to receive the Jnanapitha Award. He was considered to be India's highest accolade for literature. This was awarded to him for a collection of his most famous poems titled Chidambara.

7. Shankha Ghosh

 He was an Indian poet and critic. Ghosh got his undergraduate degree in Arts in Bengali language from the Presidency College, Kolkata. He pursued his master’s degree from the University of Calcutta in the year 1954. He won the Jnanpith Award from the Government of India in the year 2016.

8. Mahadevi Varma

She was an Indian Hindi-language poet and a novelist. She has been also addressed as the Modern Meera. In the year 1982 she won the Jnanpith Award for her poetry collection Yama.
