Complex Sentence and Rules

Complex Sentence
Complex Sentence has a independent clause and atleast one dependent clause. 


Eg. 1. She went to the college. 
      2. We decided to go for a trip. 

Eg. 1. Although it was raining 
        2. When the sunset.
Complex Sentence 
Eg. 1. She completed her work although she was sick. 
In this sentence She completed her work is Independent clause. 
Although she was sick is dependent clause. 
       2. The temperature drops quickly when the sun sets. 
In this sentence The temperature drops quickly is Independent clause.
When the sunset is dependent clause

     3. Although she was tired, she completed her homework 
In this sentence Although she was tired is dependent clause.
She completed her work is Independent clause. 

Certain rules to be followed for using comma in a Complex Sentence 

1. When the dependent clause comes at the beginning of a sentence then use comma. 

For eg. If you work hard, you can win. 

2. When independent clause comes at the beginning of a sentence don't use comma. 
For eg: 
     She completed her homework although she was tired. 

Subordinating conjunctions and commas
Subordinating conjunctions includes
Because - indicates reason
Since - indicates time or reason
Although - indicate contrast
Eventhough - indicate contrast 
If - indicate condition 
Unless - indicate condition 
Relative pronouns:
Who - refer to people
Which - refer to animals or things 
That - refer to people or things. 
Whom - person
Whose - person

In Complex Sentence dependent clause is introduced with subordinating conjunctions or Relative pronouns. 

Rules to be followed 
1. When a subordinating conjunction is in the middle or at the end of a sentence, it doesnot need a comma.
eg. He studied hard because he wanted to pass the exam. 

2. When a subordinating conjunction starts a sentence, the dependent clause it introduces often needs to be separated from the main clause using comma. 
Eg. If you finish your homework, you can go home
