The term “Hottentot Venus” refers to Saartjie Baartman, a woman from the Khoikhoi ethnic group in South Africa. In the early 19th century, she was exhibited as a curiosity In Europe under the name “Hottentot Venus” due to her physical features, particularly her large buttocks.

Saartjie Baartman was exploited and objectified during her lifetime, and her story is often cited as an example of racial and gender exploitation. She was subjected to dehumanizing treatment and exhibited as a freak show attraction. After her death, her remains were displayed in museums for many years.
