The Restoration England (1660-1688)
Charles II restored the throne of England. Political monarchy, parliament, and law were brought back to its original status. Anglicanism became the religion of upper class people.
There was cold war between the parson and squire. Addison in his Spectator claims " The parson and the squire live in a perpetual state of war".
Two political parties came into existence during the Restoration Age,
Whigs - supporters of Parliament.
Tories - supporters of King.
Science was used for the development of agriculture, industry, medicine, and engineering. Royal Society of Science was founded in1662. There was a conflict between science and religion. Superstitious belief, divine punishment and witchcraft vanished among people.
During restoration age the theatres were opened. The stage was artificially lighted with candles. No drop curtains and painted scenery. Most popular restoration drama was "Wycherley's Country Wife".
The Licensing Act was passed in 1663 by the parliament. Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained got published. Private libraries contained many valuable volumes of great writers like pepys. In 1684 a public library was established by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
The people of restoration age have always maintained a high standard of living.
Sports and pastimes were revived during restoration period. Fox hunting, nettings of birds, hunting of deer, horse riding, bear biting, sword fighting, cock fighting, wrestling, football, and horse racing game were their sports and pastimes. Cock fight and horse racing was popular among Royal people.
Two great natural calamities of the restoration period were the plague and the Great Fire.
The Plague - 1665, declined London population.
The Great Fire - 1666, destroyed churches and buildings.
After the Great Fire London was reconstructed.
