Pronoun and it's types.

Pronoun


A pronoun is a word that can replace a noun in a sentence. There are 9 types of pronouns,

1.     Personal pronoun

2.     Demonstrative pronoun

3.     Interrogative pronoun

4.     Reflexive pronoun

5.     Emphatic or intensive pronoun

6.     Reciprocal pronoun

7.     Indefinite pronoun

8.     Distributive pronoun

9.     Relative pronoun

1.     Personal pronoun

We use a simple substitute for the proper name ( I, you, we, he, she, it, they).

Eg. Geetha – She

       Rama – He

       Cow – It

2.     Demonstrative pronoun

Pronoun that point to specific thing.

Eg. This is my book.

      That looks like a bird.

      These are nice shoes.

      Those are my slippers.

3.     Interrogative pronoun

This pronoun is used to ask questions.

Eg. Who are you?

      When are you going to Chennai?

     What is your name?

      Where are you going?

      How are you?

4.     Reflexive pronoun

Pronouns are used as objects in a sentence. This is used when something does something to itself.

Eg. She pinched herself.

      He kicked himself.

      I washed the car myself.

      We enjoyed the party ourselves.

      Don’t blame yourself.

5.     Emphatic or Intensive pronoun

They are used to refer to the subject.

I myself.

She herself.

You yourself.

He himself.

We ourselves.

They themselves.

6.     Reciprocal pronoun

When exchange is happening between two people we use each other and one another. Mr. X and Mr. B are talking to each other. One another is used in a formal situation. We use each other is often used in informal situation.

For eg.

Sita and Ram likes each other.

Sita and Ram likes one another.

7.     Indefinite pronoun

It does not refer to any specific person, thing are amount.

For eg. All, any, anybody, anyone, anything, each, every body, everything, few, many, nobody, several, some, somebody, someone.

8.     Distributive pronoun

Pronoun which denotes persons or things or group separately. For eg.

Each one of the students have participated in the drama.

I may buy either of these two gifts.

Neither of them plays well.

Either of you can help me.

9.     Relative pronoun

It is similar to interrogative.

For eg:

     He who wrote this essay is a singer.

     Tell me when are you going.

     Say me why are you feeling sad.
