Play Writing

Mastery of life and talent using words equip a person to be a great playwright. There are two essential things for a play.

·       Action

·       Emotion

The paly is a play on human action and an arousal of human emotions.

                  “ I want my audience to feel they can go home and think”

-             John Osborne.

Theatre is a temple where an audience comes to have a dip in the emotional experience and goes back refreshed.

Ingredients for a play:

·       Theme

·       Character

·       Plot

·       Dialogue

·       Setting

Theme:  The theme is the central message of a play. In Shakespeare's play Othello the protagonist’s life ends in tragedy for suspecting his wife Desdemona.  This theme conveys the truth of life. Santiago in Old Man and the Sea states that “ Life is but a big drop of tears”.

Character: The success of a play depends on the characterization and plot. Pick characters from real life and using imagination transform those characters fictional.

Dialogue: Dialogue is the essence of a play. It reveals the characters and carries the story forward. To write a good dialogue hear to people’s conversations. The play write converts the ordinary conversations into sparkling, meaningful dialogue.

a.       Master the way different people speak.

b.      Moving the story forward through dialogue.

c.      Creating meaning through dialogue.

Plot:

Plot is the sequence of interconnected events within the story of a play, novel, film, epic, or other narrative literary work. More than simply an account of what happened, plot reveals the cause-and-effect relationships between the events that occur.

Setting:

It’s the place where the action of the story takes place.

Mood :

Mood is the emotional tone of the play which varies with the climax and anti-climax.
