Two
Gentlemen of Verona
A.J Cronin was a Scottish
writer and a novelist. His short story “Two Gentlemen of Verona” is a story
about two little boys named Nicola and Jacopo. The title of this story is named
after Nicola and Jacopo. They are called as the Two gentlemen of Verona
because of their good qualities. Both the brother takes care of their sister
Lucia who is suffering from Tuberculosis. This story is set in the town of
Verona located near the foot hills of Alps in the North of Italy.
Nicola the eldest was 13
and Jacopo the younger one was 12 years old. Their father was a famous singer
and hard worker who died in the war. They willingly took the responsibility of
caring Lucia.
On the foot hills of the
Alps of Verona, Nicola and Jacopo were selling strawberries. The narrator was
provoked to see the boys selling strawberries. Both the boys were shabbily
dressed and they looked skinny. But their eyes were sincere and attractive. The
narrator was impressed by seeing these boys and purchases the biggest basket of
strawberries.
Next day the narrator
meets the boys in front of a hotel, they were shining shoes. They also performed different tasks. They
helped the narrator by getting a packet of American cigarrete for him. They
bought tickets for opera, guided him to Juliet tomb and ran errands for narrator.
Driving to Poleta the narrator guessed that the boys lived near a hilly area. They reached a hospital and the two boys leaped out of the car. They were greatly excited to see their sisters who was under treatment.
The narrator is impressed by the hard work done by the boys to save money for their sister. He discovers the whole story about the boys from the nurse who is taking care of the ailing sister. Thus, the narrator is deeply touched by the devotion and love of the boys towards their sister. They didn’t lose their spirit and never looked back. Their selfless action brought a new nobility to human life, it gave a promise of a greater hope for a better life.
