“God sees the truth but waits” is a
short story written by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy in the year 1872. This
story is about a young merchant named Ivan Dimitrich Aksionov who lost hope but
trusted only God. This story strengthens the biblical message that “ When the
world is up against you, God alone knows the truth”.
Aksionov lived with his wife and
children in Vladimir. He owned two shops and a house. He is a handsome, humorous
person and good in singing. One summer Aksionov plans to attend the Nizhny
fair. His wife warned him about her bad dream. In the dream Aksionov had
returned from the town with Grey hair.
Aksionov started his journey and
meets another merchant on his way. They both stay in the same inn. Aksionov awakens
early and leaves for the fair. On his way he meets two soldiers in a troika.
These two soldiers stopped him and began to question. They questioned him about
the merchant he met in his travel. Aksionov was imprisoned by the police
charging him for murdering the merchant by cutting his throat with a knife. His
wife was shocked to hear the news and she was reminded about the bad dream.
Askinov was imprisoned in Siberia for
26 years. The prison life made Aksionov a well-grounded and God-fearing man. He
becomes a mediator of sorts in the prison. The officers and other prisoners
also respected him.
One day a new prisoner named Makar Semyonich
entered the prison. Aksionov discovered that Makar Semoynich is the killer. Makar
Semyonich approaches Aksionov that night in a terrible state, eventually
admitting to Aksionov that it was he who killed the merchant and he also
planned to murder Aksionov but spared him after hearing noises.
The story reaches its climax when Semyonich grovels for Aksionov's forgiveness after
Aksionov decides not to tell the authorities of Semyonich's involvement in the
escape tunnel. Aksionov finds himself released from the burden of his bitterness
after he grants God's forgiveness.
He realizes that forgiveness is the path to peace.
